Whistler Information

A picturesque alpine ski resort in the heart of British Columbia’s backcountry wilderness, Whistler lies a mere 73 miles from Vancouver, making it a popular weekend retreat for busy urbanites. The absence of cars and abundance of cozy cafes, boutiques and gourmet restaurants give Whistler the look and feel of an idyllic European mountain village.

But the town’s charms go far beyond its aesthetic appeal and walkability. Whistler is one of the leading areas in the world for winter leisure activities and is one of the top ski-resort towns in North America. Visitors continue to flock to the area for what locals describe as the two greatest vertical-rise mountains in North America: Blackcomb Mountain’s vertical drop is a whopping 5,280 ft/1,609 m, and Whistler Mountain’s is close behind at 5,020 ft/1,530 m.

With easy access to British Columbia’s endless resource of natural treasures, the region also serves as a playground for outdoor summer activities, such as mountain biking, hiking, climbing and other ecoadventures. It is also a golfer’s paradise, with four of Canada’s top 100 golf courses. Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Robert Cupp have each designed championship masterpieces in this magnificent setting, earning Whistler a spot among the top golf destinations in the world.

Weather in July: Average High is 76 degrees/Average Low is 50 degrees

Resort Information

Nestled at the base of Blackcomb mountain, Fairmont Chateau Whistler is perfectly placed to make the most of the BC resort’s vast array of summer activities. Guests can sip martinis on the slopeside Mallard Terrace or relax poolside in a private cabana. Golfers enjoy mountain views and may spot the occasional ambling black bear on the hotel’s 18-hole championship course, created by Robert Trent Jones II. If you need a few tennis pointers, the Fairmont Health Club can arrange lessons with certified professionals on one of its two Plexipave outdoor courts. Fairmont guides organize summer excursions, including hikes and lake swims.

Overview: This is a grand and busy property and the largest lodging in Whistler. It is the recipient of a constant onslaught of awards, domestic and international, and is just far enough from the center of town to be quiet while still being within walking distance of shops and restaurants.

Dining: In the lobby is the Mallard Lounge and Terrace, which serves signature beverages and light meals, often accompanied by live music. The Wildflower is a relaxed spot at breakfast, transforming to an elegant, intimate setting by night. The formal grill room offers inventive multicourse prix-fixe menus, hearty cuts of meat, and a traditional afternoon tea. Portobello’s open kitchen and informal sofas are the right setting for its bakery, deli and pasta specials served from early morning through late afternoon. The Chalet serves a delightful fondue menu.

Accommodations: Bright, carpeted hallways lead to the fair-sized guest rooms in both the original and newer wings. All have warm honey-hued woods, soft goods in golds and browns, and picture windows that open. Minibars, desks with power ports, high-speed internet access and voice mail, coffeemakers, irons, and king or queen beds are the customary accoutrements. The hotel recently underwent a multi-million dollar refurbishment to renew the bathrooms.
